Christian Books Do Not Fly Off the Shelves, someone Has to Push Them

I once spoke with a woman who had written a Christian book and I asked her what plans she had to promote it. She said, "I don't intend to promote it, that's the publisher's responsibility."

Wrong answer.

Bookstore

There used to be a time when publishers promoted books, now about all they do is issue catalogs and put them in the hands of overworked traveling bookstore reps. Once upon a time publishers had big publicity departments which set up author tours, book signings and radio and television interviews. That day is largely gone. Sure, the big name authors can get the celebrity medicine from publishers, but that's only after they have sold a million books and there is some evidence that they're going to sell a few million more.

Some authors who are new to the publishing firm are under the impression that bookstores are in the firm of promoting their inventory. That's not true either. You seldom see Christian bookstores placing print ads in local newspapers or having Tv spots highlighting the availability of particular books. The Christian bookstore firm is rather archaic because they sell on consignment, and they are able to return unsold books to the publisher. They have puny motivation to advertise your book.

So who has the accountability for promoting the Christian book you have written? You! Before you sign a ageement with a publishing company, they're going to want to know if you have a platform. What is the platform? It is a base of followers who are likely to buy your book. Church pastors have the people who attend their church as a platform, speakers have their audiences, and bloggers have their readers. Each follower constitutes a plank in your platform and they are the core buyers of your book. If you have no platform it is much harder to get public visibility and get book sales rolling.

Everyone hopes this core platform group will spread news of your book by word-of-mouth and that it becomes a bestseller straight through that means. Word-of-mouth is the cheapest and most effective book promotion recipe available. Authors and publishers love it when a book catches fire by that method, and when it does publishers come to be willing to spend money to fan the flames.

If you're reasoning about writing a book, you need to think about building your platform now. When you gift your book to a publisher, you need to tell them how many people attend your church or your seminars, or who read your blog. Information like that helps them make the financial decision to publish your book. A great platform means there is a ready-made market for your book.

In increasing to having an initial platform, you need to think about the other ways that you can promote your book. The most coarse ways are by keeping book signings, seminars, news articles, and doing radio and television interviews.

You may get some book promotion maintain from your publisher. However, in most cases it's going to be your accountability to promote your book yourself. You will have to pay for it out of your own pocket, but it is an investment which could reap huge rewards.

Soccer religious doctrine in the World Cup

As we watch the 2010 World Cup, Americans are amazed at how intense the fans are throughout the world. Is absolutely incredible, and even though soccer today is not as big as football, basketball, and baseball, it absolutely will be in the future. It turns out that the 2010 census is revealing that there are an ever expanding number of Hispanic folks in the Us, and they are the fastest-growing demographic segment - and on average; they love soccer.

Indeed, so do I, as I played soccer for seven years as a young man, and nowhere near the level of these thinkable, players in the World Cup of course, but adequate to understand the game, and love it for what it is. The team work, the training, the agility, and you learn a lot about winning, what it takes to win, and there is a lot of religious doctrine in that.

Bookstore

In fact, the other day I was at the bookstore and I had to pick up a new book, and I noticed on the shelf a book titled; "Soccer and religious doctrine - gorgeous Thoughts on a gorgeous Game," by Ted Richards, Open Court Press Publishers, New York, Ny, (2010), 406 pp, Isbn: 978-08126-967-69 - I bought this book immediately.

If you love soccer, and if you love watching soccer on Tv, if you are very considered scheduling your day around the World Cup games in South Africa in 2010, then this is a book I very much recommend to you. For anyone who's ever played the game to win, played the game for the teamwork and camaraderie, or watched the game in amazement, this is a book you should read.

This is a great book for the athlete, and the mental man, and I liken it to "Zen and the Art of motorcycle Repair," it's just fabulous. It makes a good coffee table book as well. There are lessons and thoughts throughout the book, that make you see the game of soccer for what it is. After all, this is a sport that has united the world, and brought us closer together. It's a sport played and watched by billions of people.

There is no sport like soccer the world over, and either you call it, futball or soccer hardly matters, what matters is you get to learn the game more, and understand the philosophy, psychology, and what it all means - behind the scenes, in the minds of the players, coaches and fans, this is Soccer religious doctrine at its best. And I very recommend this book to you. Please consider it.

Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World's Stolen Treasures Overview

The Wall Street Journal called him “a living legend.” The London Times dubbed him “the most famous art detective in the world.”

In Priceless, Robert K. Wittman, the founder of the FBI’s Art Crime Team, pulls back the curtain on his remarkable career for the first time, offering a real-life international thriller to rival The Thomas Crown Affair.

Rising from humble roots as the son of an antique dealer, Wittman built a twenty-year career that was nothing short of extraordinary. He went undercover, usually unarmed, to catch art thieves, scammers, and black market traders in Paris and Philadelphia, Rio and Santa Fe, Miami and Madrid.

In this page-turning memoir, Wittman fascinates with the stories behind his recoveries of priceless art and antiquities: The golden armor of an ancient Peruvian warrior king. The Rodin sculpture that inspired the Impressionist movement. The headdress Geronimo wore at his final Pow-Wow. The rare Civil War battle flag carried into battle by one of the nation’s first African-American regiments.

The breadth of Wittman’s exploits is unmatched: He traveled the world to rescue paintings by Rockwell and Rembrandt, Pissarro, Monet and Picasso, often working undercover overseas at the whim of foreign governments. Closer to home, he recovered an original copy of the Bill of Rights and cracked the scam that rocked the PBS series Antiques Roadshow.

By the FBI’s accounting, Wittman saved hundreds of millions of dollars worth of art and antiquities. He says the statistic isn’t important. After all, who’s to say what is worth more --a Rembrandt self-portrait or an American flag carried into battle? They're both priceless.

The art thieves and scammers Wittman caught run the gamut from rich to poor, smart to foolish, organized criminals to desperate loners.  The smuggler who brought him a looted 6th-century treasure turned out to be a high-ranking diplomat.  The appraiser who stole countless heirlooms from war heroes’ descendants was a slick, aristocratic con man.  The museum janitor who made off with locks of George Washington's hair just wanted to make a few extra bucks, figuring no one would miss what he’d filched.

In his final case, Wittman called on every bit of knowledge and experience in his arsenal to take on his greatest challenge: working undercover to track the vicious criminals behind what might be the most audacious art theft of all.

Your Money and Your Brain: How the New Science of Neuroeconomics Can Help Make You Rich Review

Your Money and Your Brain: How the New Science of Neuroeconomics Can Help Make You Rich Overview

What happens inside our brains when we think about money? Quite a lot, actually, and some of it isn't good for our financial health. In Your Money and Your Brain, Jason Zweig explains why smart people make stupid financial decisions -- and what they can do to avoid these mistakes. Zweig, a veteran financial journalist, draws on the latest research in neuroeconomics, a fascinating new discipline that combines psychology, neuroscience, and economics to better understand financial decision making. He shows why we often misunderstand risk and why we tend to be overconfident about our investment decisions. Your Money and Your Brain offers some radical new insights into investing and shows investors how to take control of the battlefield between reason and emotion.

Your Money and Your Brain is as entertaining as it is enlightening. In the course of his research, Zweig visited leading neuroscience laboratories and subjected himself to numerous experiments. He blends anecdotes from these experiences with stories about investing mistakes, including confessions of stupidity from some highly successful people. Then he draws lessons and offers original practical steps that investors can take to make wiser decisions.

Anyone who has ever looked back on a financial decision and said, "How could I have been so stupid?" will benefit from reading this book.

Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance Overview

The essential complement to the pathbreaking book Competitive Strategy, Michael E. Porter's Competitive Advantage explores the underpinnings of competitive advantage in the individual firm. With over 30 printings in English and translated into thirteen languages, this second volume in Porter's landmark trilogy describes how a firm actually gains an advantage over its rivals. Competitive Advantage introduces a whole new way of understanding what a firm does. Porter's groundbreaking concept of the value chain disaggregates a company into "activities," or the discrete functions or processes that represent the elemental building blocks of competitive advantage.

Now an essential part of international business thinking, Competitive Advantage takes strategy from broad vision to an internally consistent configuration of activities. Its powerful framework provides the tools to understand the drivers of cost and a company's relative cost position. Porter's value chain enables managers to isolate the underlying sources of buyer value that will command a premium price, and the reasons why one product or service substitutes for another. He shows how competitive advantage lies not only in activities themselves but in the way activities relate to each other, to supplier activities, and to customer activities. Competitive Advantage also provides for the first time the tools to strategically segment an industry and rigorously assess the competitive logic of diversification.

That the phrases "competitive advantage" and "sustainable competitive advantage" have become commonplace is testimony to the power of Porter's ideas. Competitive Advantage has guided countless companies, business school students, and scholars in understanding the roots of competition. Porter's work captures the extraordinary complexity of competition in a way that makes strategy both concrete and actionable.

Giant Steps (Coltrane's Solo) [6 Sep. 09]

Giant Steps (Coltrane's Solo) [6 Sep. 09] Tube. Duration : 1.10 Mins.

[My first video upload, enjoy!] One of the most notorious jazz compositions ever written, "Giant Steps" (from the album of the same name released in 1960), is a textbook example of the Coltrane cycle. That is, modulating in a cycle of descending major thirds, which is very unusual compared to more common ones such as the cycle of fourths. The hardest part of this tune is the first eight bars, which (at about 300 bpm) modulates between B, G, and Eb major within two bars (about 1.5 seconds!). It gets a bit easier from there, slowing down to one key per two bars, but don't get me wrong, it's still bloody hard! The melodic language of his solo is actually very simple, and demonstrates a few great ways to practice improvising over chord changes. He uses arpeggios and digital patterns (eg 1235, 5321) over the chords, as well as many standard bebop patterns (eg the bebop scale and the 3-b9 movement over dominant chords). That being said, it sounds very modern due to the Coltrane cycle, and using the cycle over standard ii-VI's can be a great way to play outside (video lesson coming soonish, maybe?). Check out this video of me having a go at the first few choruses of his solo at speed, and definitely have a listen to the original recording!

Knowing what home school curriculum books or resources to purchase can be an splendid task. There are so many things to choose. How do you know which one to pick and either it will be right for your family? Here are some questions you can ask yourself when seeing at separate home school resources:

1. What is my child's learning style? Does this book or curriculum fit in with how my child learns?

Bookstore

2. Is this resource a formal textbook, workbook or unit-study support material?

3. Do I know anyone else that is using this book or curriculum? What do they have to say about it? What inescapable and negative comments do they have about this book or curriculum?

4. Does this resource look like it's easy to use? Can I just pick it up and teach from it or do I have to spend some time reading straight through the manual to prepare?

5. Can I view this curriculum at a bookstore or homeschool conference?

6. What does my child say about it after they have looked over it? You don't have to put as much stock in this talk as the others, but sometimes your child has some understanding into either you should use this or not. Children tend to want to have the easiest work possible, so you will need to use your judgement about either your child should ultimately use this curriculum or not.

7. Is this book or resource secular or Christian? Is this fact important to you or not?

8. If you get confused or frustrated with this resource, is there parent support available?

Once you talk all these questions, you will have a best idea of either this book or resource will fit in with your educational and family goals or not. You will invariably purchase some things that you don't need. Every veteran home schooler has purchased books or resources that they didn't like or need at some point over the years, no matter how intimately they looked at what they were buying. You just move on and learn from those purchases. But, for the most part, these questions should help you make an informed decision of what you should purchase for homeschooling this year.
